The Board of Directors
AΩA's board of directors develops society policies and programs, ratifies constitutional changes, and directs funding mechanisms for the society. It also elects honorary members. The board includes, in addition to members at large, councilor directors, student directors, a medical society director, and a resident director.
The National Office
Reporting to the board of directors, AΩA's national office, located in Menlo Park, California, has a small staff that coordinates and administers national programs, keeps membership records, and publishes The Pharos. The society's executive secretary and assistant treasurer are also based there. The national office serves as resource and support to the individual chapters and associations.
Chapters
Councilors at the 120 chapters are responsible for nomination of local members, and administration of programs and chapter activities, which include visiting professorships, chapter banquets, and service projects sponsored by the chapter.
Associations
Schools lacking an active AΩA chapter may form an AΩA Association. Associations cannot elect students, but can elect residents, faculty, and alumni as allowed by AΩA's constitution. In addition, associations allow their schools to participate in programs sponsored by the national organization, which are open to all members of the school.
New Chapters
Once a new medical school is established and certified by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the Association of American Medical Colleges, it may apply for an AΩA charter. Requests by the Dean and faculty members belonging to AΩA are evaluated by the executive secretary and the board of directors. Following a site visit, a recommendation is forwarded to the board for action. Contact the national office for more information about forming a new chapter.
