| AΩA:
Alpha Omega
Alpha is the only national medical honor society in the world. It
was founded in 1902 in order to recognize and perpetuate excellence
in the medical profession. As stated in the national constitution,
"Alpha Omega Alpha is organized for educational purposes exclusively
and not for profit, and its aims shall be the promotion of scholarship
and research in medical schools, the encouragement of a high standard
of character and conduct among medical students and graduates, and
the recognition of high attainment in medical science, practice, and
related fields." |

| Alpha Omega
Alpha at GW: AΩA at The George Washington University School
of Medicine is the oldest chapter in Washington, DC, founded in 1954.
Senior medical students are elected to the honor society based on
their academic performance, extracurricular activities, research endeavors,
and commitment to the community. Thirty percent of the class is nominated
and less than 15% of the class is eligible for election. In addition,
each chapter of AΩA
elects deserving housestaff, full-time faculty, and medical school
alumni each year. The elected senior students each year spend time
organizing tutorial services for underclassmen in academic need and
perform various community-based medical services. Students, alumni,
faculty, and housestaff are officially inducted into AΩA
just prior to the medical school graduation ceremony in May. |
