Welcome
to the Gamma Chapter of Tennessee Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical
Society. The Meharry Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha was established
in 1957 through the dedicated effort and direction of Daniel T.
Rolfe, Dean, School of Medicine and Harold D. West, Ph.D., President
of Meharry.

Its
Founding Members were E. Perry Crump, M.D. ‘41, Professor, Pediatrics;
Matthew Walker, M.M. ‘34, Professor, Surgery; Charles W, Johnson,
M.D. ‘53, Dean, Graduate Studies and Research; William S. Quinland,
M.D. ‘19, Professor, Pathology; Daniel T. Rolfe, M.D. ‘27, Dean
and Chair, Physiology.
The
first student inducted into Gamma Chapter was Robert A. Brown Jr.,
M.D. ‘57 who became the youngest Chair ever in the Department of
Internal Medicine.
Since
its inception, members have been elected annually from the student
body, residents, faculty, and alumni groups while maintaining a constant
requirement for excellence . Criteria implemented for membership are
as follows: exceptional scholarship, fairness in dealing with colleagues,
integrity, capable and effective Leadership, compassionate patient
care, and outstanding service to Meharry and community-at-large. |
