Charters may only be granted to colleges or schools of medicine that are fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the Association of American Medical Colleges, and that meet the society's requirements. Applications for charters must be signed by the dean of the institution and members of the faculty of medicine who are Alpha Omega Alpha members. Representatives of the society then visit the institution and make their recommendation. If it is favorable, the application is voted on by the board of directors and the governing council.
